Cast Iron Shaft

A shaft segment adds a little rotating mass of its own to whatever line it sits on, so a run of them rides jitter better without a dedicated flywheel to smooth it out. It runs north-south, east-west or straight up and down; a machine takes its drive from the two faces along its own shaft's axis.

A shaft standing on a solid floor is meant to show a support bearing there, the way vanilla's axle does against a wall.

See Shaft power and the flywheel.
