What it is
The Bessemer converter is the mod's steelmaking machine: a Bessemer Control with a Bessemer Transmission under it that takes the axle, a Bessemer Gas Intake that feeds the blast, the vessel the control spawns two blocks in front of it, and the molten canals that fill and drain it. The control starts the structure and is its operating lever. The vessel cannot be finished in survival. The Bessemer process explains how it runs.
Build order

Clear a space three blocks wide and three deep for the vessel, with headroom above it and two courses below for the output canal. The vessel reserves its whole cube.

Place the Bessemer Control facing the way the machine should face. Everything else is measured from it.

Place the Bessemer Transmission directly under the control, and the Bessemer Gas Intake beyond the vessel's cell on the same centre line. Both must carry the same facing as the control.

Lay the molten canal tap beside the vessel's cell one course up, facing the vessel, with a straight canal running on from it: that is the fill line. Lay the canal start beside the vessel two courses down, with its own straight canal running away: that is the pour. The layout checks neither facing.

Right-click the control holding one iron or steel large gear and eight iron or steel rods. The vessel appears in its cell and fills the reserved cube, which is what completes the structure.

Right-click the vessel to raise it through seven build stages, holding the materials for the stage in hand. Plate, nails and strips and rod are the iron or steel ones; Bessemer steel stock satisfies none of these:

Connect an axle to the transmission and a blast main, through at least one pipe segment, to the gas intake.
Orientation
The control's facing is the structure's facing. The gas intake and the transmission are checked separately from the multiblock: the multiblock accepts any orientation, and the machine then refuses to run and names the misaligned block on the readout. Both have to face the same way as the control.
The vessel tilts to one side only. There is no mirrored variant; building the whole machine from the other side is the only way to flip which side it pours to.
First run
- Get the axle turning and the blast main above 2.5 atm.
- Charge cold steel scrap now if any is wanted, by right-clicking the control holding steel bits.
- Sneak and right-click the control to tilt to filling, then open the canal tap and let pig iron run in.
- Right-click with no modifier to stand the vessel up. The blow starts and the vessel's readout counts the carbon down from 4 %.
- Watch the carbon figure. About five minutes later it reaches 0.20 % and the status flips from
Blowing...toOver-blowing past steel...; that flip is the signal, and theBessemer steel readyline appears only once the blast has stopped. Sprint and right-click to skim the slag off, then sprint and right-click again and hold for a second to pour the steel.
Read the vessel, not the control. The control shows only whether the axle is turning; the charge, the carbon, the heat balance and the status are all on the vessel.
What goes wrong
The structure will not complete. The vessel has not been spawned. Its fillers are structure cells, so the count stays short until it is placed.
"Needs 1 large gear and 8 iron/steel rods in your hotbar." The materials must be in the hotbar, not the backpack, and the gear must be a smithable iron or steel large gear rather than a rusty one.
"The converter cannot be placed!" Something is in the 3x3x3 volume. Clear it, including snow layers, which do not count as air.
Stage 3 will not take. It needs straight cast pipe, which has no recipe. In survival the vessel stops here.
It is built and does nothing. Check the readout on the vessel for a misaligned intake or transmission, then for power, then for blast pressure.
It fills with nothing. The layout does not check the tap's facing: a tap turned the wrong way completes the structure and then never pours in. Break it and place it facing the vessel.
Solidified residue. A small hardened charge chisels out of the upper hatch. A large one does not: breaking the vessel is the only way to clear it, and it loses a little metal.
