What it is
The smoke stack is the chimney that vents surplus exhaust to the sky: a brick base three wide and three deep around a Smoke Stack Intake, and an open flue rising from it. It is the relief valve of the whole hot-blast plant: a furnace whose exhaust run has nowhere to empty chokes and goes out. The intake starts the structure and is the only part of it with any machinery. Hot blast explains where it sits in the plant.
Build order
- Clear a column three wide and three deep at the base and eleven courses tall. The chimney needs open sky above it to read as a chimney, though nothing in the structure checks that.
- Place the intake in the bottom course facing out, where the exhaust main will meet it.
- Ctrl plus shift and right-click the intake to project the build outline.
- Lay the foundation course and the two solid courses of refractory brick around the intake, with the flue cell left as air.
- Build the chimney above them: each course is four bricks around an open centre, and it rises nine more courses. Any ordinary brick works up there, refractory or not.
- Leave every flue cell clear all the way up. A blocked flue leaves the structure incomplete.
Orientation
The intake connects on one face only, the one it is turned to. The chimney rises straight above it and does not move with the facing.
First run
- Run the exhaust main to the intake. The stack pulls 48 L/s off the network it is joined to, which is one blast furnace's whole output.
- Put the stack on a relief branch behind a pressure valve set below 1 atm, rather than in line with the stoves. That way the stoves get first call on the gas and the stack takes only what backs up.
- Watch the plume. Soot means exhaust, white means steam, and nothing means the run is carrying plain air or is empty.
What goes wrong
The furnace still chokes. The stack is not on the same network as the furnace outlets, or the relief valve's threshold is set too high for it to ever open.
It vents nothing. The run is empty, the furnace is out, or the network is carrying a liquid, which the stack refuses.
It will not complete. A flue cell is blocked, or the chimney is short. Snow counts as a block, not as air.
It will not craft. Its recipe needs a straight cast pipe, which has no recipe.
