Straight molten canal segment.

This shape doubles as the run's valve: seal a straight cell with fire clay and it becomes a separator that cuts the run there, and a chisel breaks the seal again and refunds part of what it cost. Sealing is refused unless the cell and every canal neighbour on its connector faces stand empty, so a seal can never trap metal against itself.

Which rock or brick a run is cut from changes nothing about how it carries metal; that choice is cosmetic. See Molten metal and casting.
