Watt Beam Engine

Low-pressure beam engine - the first step into steam power. Drives one attached sub-machine.

The crafted block is the cylinder end of the beam engine: place it with its back toward the boiler, since the steam inlet is fixed there and the machine never turns once raised. Building it through its stages raises the beam over the cell two ahead of the block; that cell is the drive seat, and dropping a sub-machine into it is what turns the engine's delivered power into pumped water or a turning axle.

See Steam engines and sub-machines for fitting a sub-machine and for what breaks the engine.
