Solidified Metal

  • Solidified Pig Iron: Pig iron that cooled and hardened before it could be tapped or poured.
  • Solidified Cast Iron: Cast iron that froze in the cupola hearth before it could be tapped.

This is what a shaft furnace's charge leaves behind if it cools before it could be tapped or poured: a chilled charge sitting in a raceway, or a furnace breached and gone cold with metal already resting in its hearth. It solidifies where it stands and has to be mined out like any other block; nothing recovers it as a liquid again.

See Furnaces and heat.
