Steelmaking Expanded (smex)

Steelmaking Expanded adds a blast furnace, molten canals and a Bessemer converter. The furnace smelts iron ore into a reservoir of melt, the canals plumb that melt to molds, and the converter blows it into steel. This is version 0.9.8, and it needs Expanded Library 0.7.2 and Pipes and Power Expanded 0.6.7 or later.

The mod carries no guard against later library versions: with exlib 0.8 or newer installed the game simply does not load it, because its assembly reference no longer matches. exlib 0.8 does not leave that silent: it logs one error and tells every joining player exlib <version> does not work with Steelmaking Expanded and Pipes and Power Expanded: keep exlib 0.7.2 with them, or replace them with Iron Industry Expanded.

Steelmaking Expanded itself is not being carried forward. Its successor is Steel Industry Expanded, a new mod built on exlib 0.8 and later rather than an update to this one, and worlds do not carry over between the two.

The mechanics, in the order you meet them:

  1. Ironmaking - burden, blast, heat and the two taps.
  2. Hot blast - the cowper stoves, the smoke stack and the swap loop.
  3. Molten metal - how a canal run flows, cools and freezes.
  4. Casting - the molds, the pour and carrying a filled mold.
  5. Slag and its products - fertilizer, mortar and paving.
  6. Bessemer process - what a blow needs and what it yields.
  7. Commands and config - every number and the command that changes it.
  8. Compatibility - what this mod needs, patches and adapts to.

The builds:

  • Blast furnace - the tower, its hoppers, its tuyeres and its taps.
  • Cowper stove - one of a pair, charged on exhaust and blown into the tuyeres.
  • Smoke stack - the vent that keeps a furnace from choking.
  • Bessemer converter - the vessel, its transmission and its gas intake.
